The Pulpit and the Stage

Said Nasreddin, come brother and listen
To this riddle of two platforms,
One the pulpit, tall and narrow,
The other the stage, broad and wide,
Where one is invested with grace
The other seems to speak to the devil;
Thus it is that when the monk moves
From one to the other, his soul slips
From its quest for peace and truth
To a mission for posturing and power,
So tell me, what be wide and what narrow?
