Guru was good, certainly worth a watch. The second half tapers off after a rousing finish to the first half.
A few grouses though – at least one unnecessary song, and as has become customary with Mani Ratnam movies in the last 5 years or so, leaves one with a feeling that the director did well, but squandered the chance to make the movie unforgettable. Madhavan role’s could have been etched better, and Vidya Balan-Madhavan love angle was probably unnecessary. The biggest fault though is the short shrift the director gives to Guru’s rise to the top. Not enough meat documenting his victories. The rise to the top after the initial skirmish with the Contractor family is all a bit too soon & sudden. Given that the movie is pretty much the story of Dhirubhai Ambani, there’s not enough business in the movie!
Abhishek does a good job, and for once, so does Aishwarya. But it’s Mithun Chakraborty, as the independent minded newspaper-wallah, who steals the thunder. Totally brilliant performance by Mithun, and you are left wishing that he had more to do in the second half.
Never mind the flaws, watch it, if you haven’t yet.
