An Urban Reflection…

We run
past lives
we fail to see,
as if a great fire
consumed our collective souls,
leaving behind
a vague silhouette
for a conscience –
a dessicated salve
for stories and lives
that we scratch
all around
like an annoying rash
that does not go away;
And what ought to overwhelm,
make us pause and wonder
on what we have done
to ourselves
leaves us instead
cold
and blind
to the gradual decay
of our perceptions.
