Arsenal & Real Madrid – 2

So Viera stayed. Good decision. Those two youngsters in the Arsenal lineup – Reyes and Fabregas – have been very impressive so far. Arsenal look very very good. Best of all, they are playing football the way it should be played.

Michael Owen’s move to Real Madrid was a surprise. Not a bad signing, me thinks. He should do well, IF he gets enough opportunities to start. This also puts added pressure on Raul. Still, Real Madrid have way too many attacking options. Of Ronaldo, Morientes, Raul & Owen – only two are going to start every match. What a waste of talent. Actually, if I were the coach, I would drop either Zidane (blasphemy!!) or Beckham, both of whom have been underpeforming, and allow three of the strikers to start. Figo’s got to play of course.

Now if only Real Madrid would borrow a leaf out of Arsenal’s book, and get back to their fluid selves. But they haven’t done anything about their defence. I foresee another tough year for Real.

  1. You’re right – most probably Morientes will be packed off on loan for another season! But now they have the option of resting their key strikers for easier matches. Also invariably one of the strikers will be injured at any point in the season so …
They could also play a 4-3-2-1 formation with two withdrawn strikers who will dig deep and feed a lone goalmouth striker who will finish .. like Raul. You’re right about them still being defensively weak. I think they signed Roma’s Walter Samuel, but with Helguera and Carlos abandoning defensive duty to run up the flanks every few minutes, you’re still left exposed at the back. Real’s style has typically been to score more than their opponents and not worry too much about conceding .. hehe!
Vieira not moving, also might have to do with the fact that he probably wouldn’t get the same playmaker role that he has at Arsenal. At Arsenal, he dictates midfield play and pace, just like a Zidane or Figo at Madrid, a Nedved at Juventus or a Totti at Roma.
And I don’t think any team can match Arsenal’s high-speed fluid style! Hehe .. Henry, Reyes, Wiltord and Pires strike the fear of God into rival defences when they run at them! 🙂

Good to meet another football buff and Madrid fan(?!).
    🙂

    • I think Wiltord’s no longer with Arsenal. I seem to have missed the news about Walter Samuel. That’s good for them…

…Oh, am a propah Madrid fan…But that’s only because Zidane plays there. My favourite club is where my favourite player plays. Simble as that. 🙂 But if I were to go by who I would rather watch, Arsenal would be team I prefer these days.

Maybe Real’s season will turn out well. Let’s see.

  2. Now if only Real Madrid would borrow a leaf out of Arsenal’s book, and get back to their fluid selves. But they haven’t done anything about their defence. I foresee another tough year for Real.

You have mistaken my friend. They have bought Walter Samuel one of the best in the business and they are lining up either Cannavora or Milan’s young Aregentinian Coloccino. 😀

I still think Zizou is the best footballer ever to walk on this planet earth. I see a good season for real with tough whip master Cammocho at helm! Amen!

    • Like I said to Ronald, I missed the Walter Samuel news. I have no idea about Coloccino. Cannavora I am not so sure is a great idea. He is not the fastest around, is he? I think they need a defender who has got the physique of a Jap Staam or a Dider Drogba, someone to brush aside Valencia, Deportivo and Barcelona’s forwards. Hopefully Samuel fits the bill.

No doubts about Zidane. I agree. Best in the business. But he’s become awfully lazy. Stands around in the midfield waiting for the ball, and is unwilling to run. I think by the end of the last season, he had lost his edge. He’s got to change a few things to keep the opponents on the backfoot. Even in the Euro, but for his two incredible goals, he was completely off colour.

      Still, he is ZIDANE! 🙂

      • Cannavora I am not so sure is a great idea.
Ask Raul, who is the best defender he ever came across, he will definately say Cannovaro, the great Italian Captain. He is one of the fastest player’s in Inter after Zanneti if i’m not mistaken. And his leadership qualities…..!

But he’s become awfully lazy. Stands around in the midfield waiting for the ball, and is unwilling to run. I think by the end of the last season, he had lost his edge

Oye oye oye! Have you seen Zidane play from last Dec till the Spanish Cup final when they lost against Zaragozza??? . When everyone was letting the team down, he was scoring in every match from mid-field, he can put the word silky soccer to shame. He himself admitted he is having the best form of his life when they had 8 points lead over Valencia and defeated Bayern in the second round of Champions league. They were looking top till the Spanish cup final hapopened. Things changed after the loss to Zaragozza, they faced failure after failure. Raul was no where to be seen, Fatso was injured, and Figo was invisible, beckham was hit by personal scandal.Zizou again said in the press that consecutive 4 match defeats in the la liga was worst time in his real madrid carrier. :<

Even in the Euro, but for his two incredible goals, he was completely off colour.

That because a guy called Jacques Santini decide to play him on the left flank against his favourite position of central mid-field with free role.

      • More read.

And some of the soccer communities on LJ , , .

Nice to know you are a soccer fan! :>

      • lol! I am not arguing with you. 🙂 Zidane is my favourite player anyway, come what may. Just feel he’s become a bit lazy. But I guess, this season will give us the answer to that.

I dig most sports actually. 🙂

      • heh! its just a friendsly banter 🙂
