Consumer Price Index

Received this piece of info in my mail today.

Please find below the Consumer Price Index numbers for All India and various centers for the year 2003 (January – December) received from Labour Bureau, Southern Region, Chennai.

Series Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sept. Oct Nov Dec
1982 523 523 525 536 536 540 538 536 536 533 534 535
1960 2641 2641 2651 2707 2707 2727 2717 2707 2707 2692 2697 2702
35-36 12572 12572 12620 12884 12884 12981 12932 12884 12884 12812 12836 12860

I guess the interpretation is: A “basket of goods” that cost Rs. 100 in 1982 would have sold for Rs. 535 in December 2003. That’s a 535% inflation rate over the last two decades. I wonder if that’s par for the course.
