sunday night update…
Slow but steady progress with linux. Got it to connect to the internet as a non root user yesterday. The file to edit was /etc/sudoers. The thing is to figure out all these configuration files. That’s the whole bloody problem.
Also subscribed to the local BLUG technical list. Not that I am going to be doing much beyond deleting the daily digest on most days. Also, downloaded videolan, one of the few available open source dvd players for linux. Saw Dil Chahta hai on that today. Good software. The rpm installed without a hitch. Considering my limited experience with linux, that’s always a nice thing. Just to compare, also saw a part of the movie on windvd. No difference whatsoever. The only thing is that VLC keeps throwing up these fairly trivial, and arbit font related errors (i used to get this when i was working on solaris too a couple of years ago, there was some fix that i can’t recall now) and a few other errors as well on the terminal. Not sure why. But that’s ok. Good chance that the windows media player does that as well, just that i probably don’t get to see it.
Gaim is still causing me problems. Connects to both yahoo and msn sometimes, but on most occasions connects only to msn. And sometimes to neither. No clue why.
I think i need to get a monitor screen though, my eyes are beginning to hurt these days. Maybe a passing phase, but as likely not. I just can’t figure what’s a good resolution for a 17 inch screen on linux, the 1268*1024 resolution is a little too small. Anything else seems a trifle too big.
Too bad Clijsters lost yesterday. Henin’s a great player no doubt (to be 5 ft 5 and win 2 slams in these times is an incredible achievement), but don’t like her much anyways.
Time for a new job?
